Sustainable Wet Process for High-Yield K₂SO₄ Production

This wet route is ideal for those looking for a more sustainable potassium sulfate fertilizer production plant, with a lower environmental impact and reduced operational costs.

  • Reaction:
    (NH₄)₂SO₄ + KCl ⇌ K₂SO₄ + NH₄Cl
  • The K₂SO₄  wet process starts from ammonium sulfate (NH₄)₂SO₄ and potassium chloride (KCl), which react at room temperature in mild conditions, providing a greener solution for K₂SO₄ production. K₂SO₄ product is then filtered and then, if required, dryed in order to reach the final specifications.
  • This innovative approach offers several advantages, compared to the Mannheim process:
  • - Lower energy use: the reaction is performed at room temperature, instead of the 600-700°C required by Mannheim furnaces
    - Use of ammonium sulfate as a sulfur source instead of sulphuric acid, which is more difficult to handle and requires higher equipment maintenance
    - A simpler process scheme
    - Better overall process optimization for maximum potassium yield
    - No HCl is produced as byproducts, but a second fertilizer product (N + K + S) which is rich in micronutrients
    - No emissions, whereas the Mannheim process requires scrubber systems for the HCl production section, the plant hood and the acid and mixed acid storage tanks
    - Less equipment maintenance and consequent higher annual production to ensure higher yield
