Amido-Alkyl Betaines: Properties and Applications

Betaines are valued for their:

Production Process

The production of Betaines involves two main phases:

  • Amidoamine Synthesis: Produced in the first reactor through condensation of fatty acids (or neutral oils) and DMAPA.
  • Betaines Formation: The Amidoamines are:
    Alkylated using Mono-Chloro Acetic Acid (MCA) or Sodium Mono-Chloro Acetate (SMCA).
    Neutralized with a caustic soda solution to achieve the final product.
The process uses an additional reactor properly sized to reach the final Betaine at commercial concentrations, typically:
  • Low Active Matter: 28.5% AM
  • High Active Matter: 36% AM
