Alkanolamides and Amidoamines Production Technologies

Alkanolamides and Amidoamines

Ballestra delivers state-of-the-art production solutions for Alkanolamides and Amidoamines, essential components in surfactant formulations for liquid detergents and personal care products.

Alkanolamides: Key Properties and Applications

Alkanolamides (e.g., Cocamide MEA - CMEA and Cocamide DEA - CDEA) are versatile non-ionic co-surfactants, widely valued for their multifunctional properties:

  • Foam Booster: Enhances foam stability in detergents.
  • Viscosity Controller & Thickener: Adjusts viscosity of liquid formulations.
  • Emulsifier & Solubilizer: Facilitates blending of oil and water phases.
  • Hard Water Resistant Agent: Improves performance in hard water conditions.
  • Hair/Fibre Softener & Antistatic: Used in personal care products and softeners.
  • Perfume Fixing Agent & Pearlescent Effect: Adds aesthetic and functional benefits.

Production Technology
Alkanolamides are produced through condensation of fatty acids and Mono- or Di-ethanolamine, according to the following process:

  • Reaction Phase: Conducted in a stirred batch reactor equipped to:
Collect and separate water or by-products generated during condensation.
Recover and recycle excess amine, ensuring process efficiency.
  • Downstream Processing:
For Mono-Alkanolamides (solid at room temperature):
    • Flaking Unit: Produces solid flakes.
    • Milling Unit: Converts flakes into powdered surfactants.

Amidoamines: Production and Role

Amidoamines, intermediates for producing Amido-Alkyl Betaines, are obtained via the condensation of fatty acids (or neutral oils) and Di-Methyl Amino Propyl Amine (DMAPA). This process shares a similar batch reactor setup, ensuring flexibility to produce both Alkanolamides and Amidoamines within the same plant.

Ballestra Production Plants: Advantages

  • Multipurpose Design: Single plant configuration for both Alkanolamides and Amidoamines production
  • Operational Efficiency: Optimized for high-quality, cost-effective output.
  • Process Integration: Advanced systems for by-product separation, amine recovery, and flaking/milling for solid surfactants.
