SO₂

SO₂ solutions for industrial and chemical applications

SO₂

Liquid sulfur dioxide (SO₂) is produced by liquefying gaseous SO₂ under pressure or by cooling it below its boiling point of -10°C (14°F). The gaseous SO₂ is typically generated by burning sulfur or sulfide ores, such as pyrite (FeS₂), in an oxygen-rich environment. The combustion process produces SO₂ gas, which is then purified to remove impurities. Sulphur may also come as component in process effluents of from sweetening operations in oil and gas.

The purified SO₂ gas is then cooled or compressed to condense it into its liquid form. Once liquefied, it is stored in pressure-resistant tanks or cylinders to prevent vaporization and ensure safety during transport and handling.

Applications of SO2

These diverse applications leverage the unique chemical and physical properties of sulfur dioxide, including its reactivity, reducing nature, and ability to inhibit microbial growth.

  • Chemical Industry:
Chemical Synthesis: It is used in the manufacture of chemicals like thionyl chloride and sulfites.
  • Preservative in Food and Beverages:
SO₂ is a preservative and antimicrobial agent in food products like dried fruits and wines, preventing spoilage and preserving color and flavor.
  • Bleaching Agent:
It is used as a bleaching agent for paper, textiles, and other materials. Its reducing properties help remove unwanted colors and stains.

  • Refrigerant:
Liquid SO₂ is used as a refrigerant in certain industrial cooling systems due to its thermodynamic properties.
  • Water Treatment:
SO₂ is used in water treatment to neutralize excess chlorine or bromine in wastewater, making it safer for discharge.
  • Pulp and Paper Industry:
It is used in processes like sulfite pulping, where SO₂ is combined with water and other chemicals to break down wood into pulp for paper production.
  • Fumigation and Sterilization:
SO₂ is used as a fumigant to control pests in storage facilities and as a sterilant for equipment in certain industries.
  • Pharmaceuticals:
In the pharmaceutical industry, SO₂ derivatives are used in drug formulations and production processes.
