Oleum and SO3

Oleum and Sulfur Trioxide (SO₃) Production Plants

Oleum and SO3

Oleum, also known as fuming sulfuric acid, is a highly reactive compound consisting of dissolved sulfur trioxide gas (SO₃) in 100% sulfuric acid.

Its production and handling require precision and advanced engineering due to its reactivity and specific storage needs.

Key Characteristics of Oleum:

  • Produced in varying strengths based on SO₃ content, with typical grades of 20-35% or 65% free SO₃.
  • Liquid at moderate temperatures; freezing point varies with concentration (e.g., ~2°C at 20%).
  • Stored in specially designed and vented storage tanks to maintain stability.

Oleum Production Process:
Oleum is generated by continuously absorbing SO₃ gas into a recirculating H₂SO₄ stream. This process occurs in a dedicated Oleum Tower installed upstream of the main Absorption Tower. The concentration is monitored and controlled by adding 98.5% sulfuric acid, closely controlled to maintain the desired specifications.

Applications of Oleum:

Oleum’s high reactivity makes it a crucial component across various industries:

  • Detergent Industry: It is used in the sulphonation process to enhance water solubility and reactivity of detergent products.
  • Chemical Synthesis: It is  a powerful dehydrating agent and precursor for numerous chemicals.

Sulfur Trioxide (SO₃) Plants

Sulfur trioxide (SO₃) is a colourless, oily liquid typically produced by evaporating oleum and subsequently condensing the vapour. Proper management and storage are critical to prevent its reaction with air moisture, which forms sulfuric acid mist.
Key Characteristics of SO₃:

  • Highly reactive and volatile; must be stored in specialized tanks designed for safety.
  • Produced in its purest form through evaporation and condensation techniques.

Applications of SO₃:
SO₃ plays a vital role in numerous industries and processes, including:

  • Ultrapure Sulphuric Acid
  • Surfactants and Detergents
  • Soaps, Shampoos, and Personal Care Products
  • Dyes and Pigments
  • Ion Exchange Resins
  • Fertilizers
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Polymers
  • Petroleum Sector (e.g., oil well drilling)
  • Explosives Manufacturing
