Urea Ammonium Nitrate and Urea Ammonium Sulfate

UAN and UAS

Urea Ammonium Nitrate (UAN) is a liquid fertilizer composed of urea, ammonium nitrate, and water. It is widely used in agriculture as a nitrogen source, playing a critical role in enhancing crop growth and yield.

UAN typically contains 28%, 30%, or 32% nitrogen by weight, making it an efficient and concentrated option for nitrogen fertilization.

Composition and Properties

UAN is a clear, non-volatile liquid with a balanced mix of nitrogen in three forms:

  • Urea-derived nitrogen (ammonium and nitrate after hydrolysis) for immediate and delayed availability.
  • Ammonium nitrogen, which adheres to soil particles, providing a sustained release.
  • Nitrate nitrogen, which is readily available for rapid uptake by plants.

This combination ensures both immediate and long-term nitrogen availability, making UAN suitable for various growth stages of crops.
Urea ammonium sulfate (UAS) is a granular fertilizer that combines urea and ammonium sulfate. It is commonly used in agriculture to provide essential nitrogen and sulfur for plant growth.

Benefits

  • Balanced nutrition: Provides both nitrogen and sulfur in a single product.
  • Improved soil health: Helps address sulfur deficiencies in soils, which have become more common due to reduced sulfur emissions.
  • Compatibility: Can be blended with other fertilizers to meet specific crop nutrient requirements.

Applications

  • Used for cereal crops, oilseeds, legumes, and other sulfur-demanding crops.
  • Suitable for a variety of soil types, especially in sulfur-deficient soils or regions with alkaline conditions.
