Calcium Nitrate

CN

Calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN) is a widely used inorganic fertilizer. Its chemical composition includes ammonium nitrate (NH₄NO₃) combined with calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) or dolomite (CaMg(CO₃)₂).

CAN is valued for its high nitrogen content and its ability to improve soil structure by reducing acidity.

Key Features

  • Nitrogen Content:
Contains approximately 26-28% nitrogen by weight.
Half the nitrogen is in the nitrate form (NO3-)which is immediately available to plants.
The other half is in the ammonium form (NH4+), which provides a slower release of nitrogen.
  • Calcium/Magnesium Benefits:
The calcium carbonate or dolomite in CAN helps neutralize soil acidity.
Improves soil structure and enhances the availability of other nutrients.

  • Physical Form:
CAN is typically available as granules or prills, making it easy to spread.
  • Uses:
Primarily used in agriculture for crops that require a significant amount of nitrogen.
Effective in neutral and slightly acidic soils.
  • Safety:
CAN is less explosive than pure ammonium nitrate, making it safer to handle and store.
However, it is still classified as an oxidizing agent and requires proper storage conditions.

Advantages:

  • Immediate and sustained nitrogen release.
  • Reduces soil acidification.
  • Enhances soil fertility over time.
