Ammonium Sulfate and Ammonium Sulfate Nitrate

AS and ASN

Ammonium Sulphate (AS) and Ammonium Sulphate Nitrate (ASN) are essential fertilizers widely used in agriculture to provide both nitrogen and sulfur to plants. Ballestra offers advanced technology for the production of these fertilizers through efficient processes involving Pipe Reactors for synthesis.

Below is an overview of the ammonium sulphate production and ammonium sulphate nitrate production processes and the associated plant technologies.

Ammonium Sulphate (AS) Production Process

The ammonium sulphate production process starts with the reaction between gaseous ammonia and sulfuric acid in a pipe reactor. This process is highly exothermic, generating heat that is used efficiently throughout the system.

  • Synthesis Reaction: Sulfuric acid reacts with liquid or gaseous ammonia, forming ammonium sulphate. The reaction is highly exothermic, which allows the evaporation of water from the recycled solution in the scrubber.
  • Granulation: The product slurry is then granulated, and the resulting granules are dried in a drum dryer using hot air in a co-current flow.
  • Separation and Cooling: The dried granules are screened, separating marketable products from oversized and undersized material. The final product is cooled and coated for improved storage quality.
  • Recycling and Dust Control: The oversized product is crushed and sent back to the granulator along with the undersized particles. All equipment is dedusted to ensure that the air rejected to the atmosphere is clean, complying with environmental standards.

Ammonium Sulphate Nitrate (ASN) Production Process
The ammonium sulphate nitrate production process utilizes similar equipment to that of ammonium sulphate production but with a modified approach to incorporate ammonium nitrate.

  • Ammonium Nitrate Solution: The ammonium nitrate solution from the battery limit is mixed with ammonia and pumped into the pipe reactor, where sulfuric acid and ammonia are added.
  • Granulation and Drying: The resulting slurry is granulated, and the granules are dried similarly as in the AS process. After drying, the granules are screened, and the marketable product is separated from oversized and undersized material.
  • Cooling, Coating, and Recycling: The final product is cooled, coated, and sent to storage. The oversized product is crushed and sent back to the granulator with undersized particles. Dust from all equipment is removed to ensure environmental safety.
